Jesus Calling - MANDATE Devotional

50th week: Jesus calling - MANDATE! Understanding God’s mandate is a key factor in succeeding God’s way

“And they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.” Mark 6:51-52 (KJV)

This is a very interesting account. When I first read it, I thought: “What does ‘their heart was hardened’ have to do with ‘they considered not the miracle of the loaves’?”. Jesus had fed the people through the miracle of multiplying the bread, and after that, when He had dismissed the crowed and His disciples had started for the other side of the lake with a little ship, suddenly Jesus came to them walking on the water.

The disciples were at first very afraid thinking it was a ghost, then found out it was actually Jesus, they received Him in the boat and when He did quiet the wind and the storm, they were so amazed, because they had not considered the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. So, what is the importance of this statement, spiritually?

Well, John 6:26-27 gives us the answer. The following day all the people sought Jesus and when they found Him, here’s what He told them: “…ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” (v.26) See? The problem again is our own flesh and it’s desire to be filled. So many Christians are that way, seeking the Lord only because of His benefits, yet, they can’t see, as these people could not, that there is a higher purpose – laboring for meat which perisheth not, but for one that endureth unto everlasting life (v.27) – His mission, His mandate, His calling, His purpose and what He was sent for.

Please read the entire John 6th chapter in this context and you will see the importance of our heart being not hardened, but soft and considering God’s miracles in the light of His being the true and living bread, sent to this world to draw all people unto Himself. Amen!
