Jesus Fish Symbol

The Jesus fish symbol or otherwise known as the sign of the fish is of course the very famous acronym (the abbreviation that is formed when you use the initial components in a phrase or name) for Jesus Christ God's Son Savior.

The symbol of the fish itself, is not a Christian one by origin. It is actually a pagan symbol, and not a very good one. I could very well say that it is even a disgusting one. Ichthys (The Greek word for FISH) was the offspring son of the ancient Sea goddess Atargatis, and was known in various mythic systems as Tirgata, Aphrodite, Pelagia or Delphine. The word also meant "womb" and "dolphin" in some tongues, and representations of this appeared in the depiction of mermaids. The fish also a central element in other stories, including the Goddess of Ephesus (who has a fish amulet covering her genital region), as well as the tale of the fish that swallowed the penis of Osiris, and was also considered a symbol of the vulva of Isis.

Anyway, I am no expert in this area, so if You would like to learn more about the origin of the fish symbol and how it entered Christianity, please visit the following links:

The reason I would like to add my commentary to the subject of the Jesus fish symbol is because I want to point out that pagan religions used the fish as their symbol, the fish itself has been created by God, so the devil does not have the right to pollute God’s creations with his perverse symbolic meanings. So, if the Christians after the time of Jesus, based on the many references Jesus Himself made, using the fish to teach His disciples some evangelism and Church growth lessons. He wanted to produce out of His disciples fishers of men (Mark 1:17); as well as used the fish symbol in the parable of the different fish gathered and sorted out in the net (Matthew 13:47-48). This means Jesus constantly used the fish to symbolize people, and when you add to that the fact that most of the disciples were fishermen by profession, maybe that’s why later in Christianity, the followers of Jesus came up with the Ichthys acronym, by revelation, and used it to recognize their own in the faith. As you know, Christianity was not the preferred religion, so to speak, so Christians had to have some secret identification among themselves. That’s why, even though perverted as symbol by the pagan religions in the context of God’s creation, the Jesus fish symbol still carries it’s significance and spiritual meaning.

God Bless You!

Nikola
